Philippines Hostage-Takers Hometown in Shock and Disbelief

Download  In Philippines this week a former policeman armed with an assault rifle hijacked a bus of Hong Kong tourists in an attempt to get his job back.

Eight of the hostages were killed in the bloody siege, which ended with several survivors crawling from the bus while emergency crews removed bodies.

The gunman was Senior Inspector Rolando Mendoza, who had spent almost three decades with Manila's police force, but was sacked earlier this year over claims of corruption.

Madonna Virola is in his village in Tanauan town, Batangas south of Manila.

There she says the community is in disbelief.

Philippines New President Takes Oath

Download  The son of democracy icons, Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III, has been officially sworn in as the new President of the Philippines.

He is the first unmarried President the country has had.

In his inauguration speech, he vowed to end corruption in the impoverished country.

But he appealed for help from everyone saying he is not a ‘rock-star’.

We travel to the Philippines to met Narda Capuyan - a former family planning nurse who is now a successful international exporter and entrepreneur.

She has brought the Indigenous Igorot hand-loom weaving from the Philippines to the world.

At present, she employs 200 people and buys from hundreds of indigenous Cordillera women weaving in their homes.

Filipino Girls Among Biggest Smokers in the World - WHO

Download  World No Tobacco Day was celebrated across the world this week.

The focus was on stopping tobacco companies promoting their products to women.

According to the World Health Organisation the number of Filipino girls who smoke is amongst the highest in the world.

This is despite a total ban on tobacco advertising that came into affect two years ago.
